DESCRIPTION: Long Pond refers to the small village of that name and 30 square miles of wetlands, heaths, hardwood forest, scrub oak barrens and the pond itself, that lie 20 miles west of Stroudsburg at the southern edge of the Pocono Plateau. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded in the Pocono Mountains, and 120 of them can be found breeding at Long Pond in the summer. The following areas will give you a representative sample of the breeding birds of this area.
Please Note: For much of the period from September through May, public hunting occurs on many parts of the Long Pond landscape. Be cautious and wear fluorescent orange clothing when birding during these months. Hunting is not permitted on Sundays. |
DIRECTIONS: To get to The Nature Conservancy office at Long Pond, where we will start our trip, take I-80 to Exit 43 (PA 115 South). After 3.1 miles, bear left onto Long Pond Road at the Pocono Raceway signs. Proceed on Long Pond road for 2.7 miles and you will see the office on your left. The office is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays and on most summer Saturdays. There are maps and literature available. Park to the left of the Nature Conservancy sign, so as not to block access to the firehouse. During the summer, look and listen for Scarlet Tanager, Black-throated Green Warbler, Red-eyed Vireo, Field Sparrow, and Northern Harrier near the building.
