Description: Long Pond is a shallow depression surrounded by marshes and swamps. There are no paths to walk along or around the pond, but there are two access points where you can look out on the water. Turn right out of The Nature Conservancy office parking lot and go 0.4 miles turning left onto Clearview Road. On the right you can glimpse Long Pond. Just past the campground, pull over to the right where the road makes a 90-degree left turn. Walk 150 yards down the unmarked dirt road to Long Pond. Be prepared for wet walking. This access gives you a view of the pond where you may see or hear dozens of bird species. Breeding Swamp Sparrow are very common along the road. You should also hear Common Yellowthroat, Yellow Warbler, Nashville Warbler, and Alder Flycatcher. American Black Duck, and Wood Duck breed in the pond, but they can be secretive and skittish when nesting. |
