Description:  At 0.6 miles on Kuhenbeaker Road, you will cross a picturesque old stone bridge over tannin-stained Tunkhannock Creek. Park on the right at the end of the pumping station driveway, being careful not to block the gate. Walk past the gate along the gravel road that parallels the creek toward the pumping station. This lush area is a typical Pocono Canadian Zone or northern conifer forest. About 100 yards past the gate on the left is a patch of rhododendron in the hemlock forest. Look and listen for Canada Warbler, a common breeding bird in this type of damp, well developed understory habitat in mixed deciduous/coniferous forest in the Poconos. In the trees above, Blue-headed Vireo can be found. Hermit Thrush are present from early April through mid-fall, often singing well into July. This hemlock forest is not large, but is rich in birdlife, with breeding Ruffed Grouse, Veery, Wood Thrush, Brown Creeper, Black-and-white Warbler, and Baltimore Oriole. Return to your car and continue on Hypsy Gap Road. On the right are European larch plantations. Soon you will notice scrub oak barrens on both sides of the road. The trails off Hypsy Gap Road are gated but open to responsible public access. There are thousands of acres of scrub oak barrens, hardwood forest and wetlands with dozens of miles of dirt roads to roam. Make sure that if you intend to wander far off the main road, you have a good map and a compass and/or GPS unit to avoid getting lost in the maze of roads in the scrub.
