Description: At PA 115, turn left (south). After you pass the racetrack, you will see more of the scrub oak barrens that surround Long Pond. In 1.6 miles, look for a locked gate on the left. This is another Nature Conservancy area (owned by Monroe County) of 500 acres. Parking here is not permitted, so continue on PA 115 for 100 yards and park on the right at Pohopoco Recreation Area, then carefully walk back to The Nature Conservancy gate. There are many miles of dirt track to explore here, but be careful, as the trails are a maze for unwary walkers. This habitat contains the same birds mentioned above for Grass Lake. Birding during migration is generally better in the scrub than in high canopied deciduous forest because birds are more easily seen in the lower, more open vegetation. Walk back to the Pohocopo Recreation Area. This four-season recreation area is part of the Pennsylvania State Forest system. there are dozens of miles of good trails that are open to hiking. Drive to the top of the hill to a tower that was built in 1934 and is operational during the spring and fall fire seasons. If you can stomach a climb to the top, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of more than 50 miles. Look north for an excellent view of the meandering Long Pond. |
