The 2010 Conservation Award was presented to Dave Skellie, Coastal Land Use & Economic Specialist, of PA Sea Grant.
Among the many research and conservation efforts Sea Grant stands out as the leading authority on Avian Botulism in the Great Lakes. PA is one of Sea Grant locations that are associated and primarily funded by NOAA. Much of their work is in taking the role of bringing public and private organizations together to make things happen.
Eric Obert, Extension Director and Associate Director, indicated that the collaborative effort is enhance by the synergy generated among the organizations with offices in the Tom Ridge Environmental Center located at the entrance to Presque Isle. Another leading issue is in regard to invasive species in Lake Erie. Sarah Whitney of PA Sea Grant‘s Harrisburg office wrote the Invasive Species management plan for the state. They also are very active in land conservation and habitat improvement.
