Return to Earl Poole Award page

This year we presented the first Annual Earl L. Poole Award. This award, honoring a person who has made significant contributions to Pennsylvania s ornithology, was presented to Jean Stull Cunningham of Waterford. Any of you who have traveled to Presque Isle State Park in Erie know her. Not only has she labored for many years banding thousands of birds there, but she also was a goodwill ambassador, always willing to talk with passersby, demonstrating what she was doing and teaching them about birds, butterflies, and flowers. The interest that she sparked and the understanding that she instilled can not be imagined. She co-authored Birds of Erie County, Pennsylvania. In addition, she served on the advisory board to the Pennsylvania Wild Resource Conservation Fund, helping to shepherd the tax checkoff funds into appropriate projects and research on non-game wildlife.
