2008

Brown Pelican — Lake Raystown, Huntingdon County on November 5, 2008. Photos by Bill Weaver. These two photos are of a juvenile Brown Pelican found at Lake Raystown. The dead bird was brought to the Animal Diagnostic Lab at Penn State and to the attention of veterinarian and birder, Dr. Eva Wallner-Pendleton. The carcass was very fresh. The necropsy suggested it may have died of starvation. The bird had been banded on Holland Island in Dorchester County, Maryland on July 15, 2008. An intense storm moved up the Mid-Atlantic coast one week prior to the discovery of this bird and may be the reason this bird ended up so far inland. This bird represents the 1st record of Brown Pelican for Huntingdon County and only the 4th record for Pennsylvania.
