Hoary Redpoll — Presque Isle State Park, Erie County; January 22, 2011. Photos by Jerry McWilliams. This bird, found by Mike Weible, was seen with a group of about 75 Common Redpolls. This photo shows the overall paler appearance compared to the darker, more heavily-streaked Common Redpoll that’s behind it. Also note the very limited amount of pink on the breast, the very faint streaking on the sides, and the clean white undertail coverts. These next two photos also show the very limited amount of pink on the breast, the very faint streaking on the sides, and the clean white undertail coverts.


This photo gives a glimpse of the unstreaked rump.


Hoary Redpoll — Presque Isle State Park, Erie County; January 25, 2011. Photos by Scott Kinzey. This second Hoary Redpoll, a female, was photographed a few days later. This photo gives a good comparison between the Hoary Redpoll and the darker, more heavily-streaked Common Redpoll behind it. This photo shows the stubby bill, the butterscotch color on the throat and breast, the very faint streaking on the sides, and the clean white undertail coverts.

Hoary Redpoll — Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County; March 1, 1994. Photo by Frank Haas. This bird was present from March 1st to the 14th at the Haas’s feeders with a flock of about 60 Common Redpolls. Note the overall pale appearance, the very limited amount of pink on the breast, the very faint streaking on the sides, and the clean white undertail coverts. This bird represents the 2nd documented record for Pennsylvania!
