DESCRIPTION: The Susquehanna River is a corridor for migrating waterfowl and other birds. Although birds can be seen here anytime during the normal migration periods, storms can produce greater numbers and uncommon species (Brant, scoters, etc.). There are three good spots for observing the river: Fort Hunter Boat Launch, 1801 North Front Street, and West Fairview Boat Launch (see Cumberland County).

DIRECTIONS: Fort Hunter Boat Launch - From US22/322 north of Harrisburg, take the PA 443 exit (Fishing Creek Valley Road) and go west (towards the river) on Fishing Creek Valley Road to the T and turn south on Front Street. Go about 0.1 mile and turn right into the boat launching area and scan the river from here. N 40.3436, W 76.9110

1801 North Front Street - From I-81, take the first exit on the east side of the river (Front Street) and go south on Front Street for about 2.7 miles and turn left (east) on Kelker Street and park.
There is adequate off street parking in two large parking lots. At Verbeke Street and 1300 N. Front there is a nice sunken garden with park benches for additional viewing of the river migrants.
This is the morning alternative to West Fairview boat launch, especially when sunny. Comfortably view the Susquehanna River for migrating ducks from park benches on the river. A telescope is needed. N 40.2736, W 76.8967
