Raystown Lake
River Road

Directions:  River Road (T430) below Raystown dam. A lightly (usually) traveled part paved/part gravel road leading to the dam itself (see below). Five miles of good and varied habitat including many views of the river, which flows out of the lake (The "Raystown Branch" of the Juniata). The water is often shallow and thus attracts some ducks. Coming from the dam, the water does not freeze and so this is a good winter waterfowl spot. This quiet, sheltered valley offers good scenery and is a nice place to seek "half-hardies" in winter and interesting nesting possibilities in spring, including Cerulean Warbler. From US 22 and PA 26 in Huntingdon, go east on US 22 for 1.9 miles and turn right onto Snyder's Run Road (near Giant supermarket). Stay left at next two intersections until you come to a sharp right bend with a boat access on the left at the confluence of the Raystown and Frankstown branches of the Juniata River. Follow the winding road as it parallels the Raystown Branch on the left approximately 5 miles south to the dam. There will be numerous places to stop to view the river and search habitat for passerines.
