Peace Valley Park
Below the Dam

Directions:  See Peace Valley Map or Google Map

Description:  The area below the dam can be good in all seasons. A gravel drive runs parallel to the dam at its base. From there an old abandoned paved road intersects that drive on the north side of the stream, and a gravel drive leading to the park maintenance buildings intersects it on the south side of the stream. These can all be walked in search of birds. Some breeding birds here are Warbling Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Eastern Kingbird, Orchard and Baltimore orioles, Rough-winged Swallow, and Willow Flycatcher. A walk up to the dam breast will yield the nesting Cliff Swallow under the concrete walkway to the water control structure. The park maintenance drive leads past a small cattail and phragmites wetland that should be checked more often. Swamp Sparrow can usually be found there all winter. In winter, this is a good area for a number of species that like cedar and poison ivy berries, as well as wintering species in general. Yellow-rumped Warbler, American Robin, Eastern Bluebird, and Cedar Waxwing can be common as long as the food lasts. Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned kinglets are usually present and with luck Brown Creeper and Winter Wren. The cedars are extensive and both Long-eared and Northern Saw-whet Owls have been found here in winter.
