Peace Valley Park
North Lookout

Directions:  See Peace Valley Map or Google Map

Description:  This overlook is a good spot to see all species of swallows during migration and when staging after breeding. Warbling Vireo, Orchard and Baltimore orioles, and Yellow Warbler are some of the breeders here. Going a short distance down the Bike & Hike Trail in either direction can often be good for migrant warblers in spring and more so in fall. After leaving Chapman Road, this is the first small parking area overlooking the lake just after the first left turn you can make off New Galena Road. This turn is labeled Park Entrance North on the park map. This parking area has been named the North Lookout or Overlook by the birders but has no official name. It provides a high vantage point to scan the waterfowl and gulls often present in winter and during migration. Pass the Lake View North (Pavilion #5) parking area and continue to Sailor's Point. A large view of the lake is had from the boat ramp area. Only New Galena Village and the dam breast provide a more expansive view. If you have time, walk down to the Bike & Hike Trail, go left and look for shorebirds along the lake edge in season. Red Phalarope, American Avocet, and Purple Sandpiper were first spotted here. Dunlin can be expected here in November. This same area often provides a feeding and resting area for geese and gulls. Barnacle Goose and Greater White-fronted Goose often rest or feed along this area when present. Often four species of gulls perch on the fishing pier for close study. The only Black-headed Gull was found in this area. Sometimes American Pipit and Snow Bunting can be found in the grass or gravel here during migration.
