Piney Tract |
||
Directions: From the intersection of Elliot Rd and Mt Zion Rd, turn southwest on Mt Zion Road and continue on. The low pines on the left are a good spot to locate Vesper Sparrow and Prairie Warbler. The road becomes paved, crests a hill and curves to the right. In the winter, this is a good spot to search for Rough-legged Hawk. During the breeding season, this is a good area for Bobolink. Continue on until the intersection with Hodil Road (TR 376). Turn left and proceed 0.5 mile up the hill. You have entered a pine plantation. Red Pine, Larch, and other conifers have been planted here during strip mine reclamation. In the winter, walk the trail that heads east into the plantation. Long-eared Owl have roosted here. Pine Siskin, and Common Redpoll forage in this area during some winters. During migration and in the summer, warblers and other songbirds use this patch. Ruffed Grouse will be heard drumming or will startle you as you spook them into flight. Retrace your path to the intersection of Elliot Road and Mt Zion Road. |
