Cook Forest State Park
Toms Run Road

Directions:  Tom's Run Road begins beyond the green comfort station on the west side of SR 1015 opposite the Nature Center. If the road is open, continue by car to the upper end, turn right on Lencer's Drive and right again at North Pine Grove onto SR 1015. Head south to Forest Drive. If the gate is closed, return to SR 1015 and head north (left) to Forest Drive.

Description:  Toms Run Road, the second stop on the loop through the park, starts across the main road from the Nature Center. This is a 4-mile, one-way dirt road that goes through hemlock forests and mature second-growth stands of mixed hardwoods. Birds of the streamside and deep forest habitats are common thrushes, warblers, flycatchers, juncos, woodpeckers, hawks, and owls. Winter Wrens, Louisiana and Northern waterthrushes, and Acadian Flycatcher have all been found here. Swainson's Thrush and northern warblers may be heard during migration. Tom's Run Road is open for car travel only during the summer and on selected weekends in the spring and fall. When the road is closed, a walk as far as Hefren Run, 0.5 mile in, can be rewarding. In either case the parking lots around the Nature Center and Shelter No. 2 are good birding spots any time. Red-breasted Nuthatch inhabit the tall spruces and Dark-eyed Junco nest along the creek.
