DESCRIPTION: Woodcock Lake was constructed in 1973 as a flood control dam on Woodcock Creek. It is a rather small lake but has been a good bird watching area. The water level in the lake in spring and summer are usually high, but in late summer or fall and winter the level is lowered which creates excellent areas for shorebirds. Some of the better birds found here have been Brant and Piping Plover. Bald Eagle are often seen as well as Osprey. Large rafts of Ring-necked and Ruddy ducks, Lesser Scaup, and Long-tailed Duck and many other species are often seen, There are several existing trails and comfort stations as well as an overlook parking lot. |
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of PA 86 and PA198 (approximately 5 miles northeast of Meadville, go east on 198, which follows the north shore of the lake, for 2 miles and turn right (south) on Shutz Road. This road crosses the lake and leads to the recreation areas on the southern shore. The lake can be scanned from a number of vantage points on both sides.
