DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Durham Road and Washington Crossing Road (PA 532) in Newtown, drive north on Washington Crossing Road for 0.5 miles. You will come to a power line cut, and the road will cross a small stream with unpaved drives on the left on both sides of the stream. Pull into the second drive, on the north side of the stream, not the first one, which is a private stable. Park, and walk around the metal farm gate across the drive. Walk 1/4 mile to the dam. The land on the right of the drive is County, but the stream and the land on the left is private. From the dam, there is a fisherman's trail through the woods that follows the right shore of the reservoir.
The entry drive, wooded and paralleling a stream, can be good for passerines during migration. From the top of the dam, scan the treetops behind you, as well as the lake below. Walk down to the right side of the lake, where a trail will lead through the woods, paralleling the lake. Look for typical woodland birds until you arrive at an opening onto the lake. Near the shallow end can be an excellent spot to scan for shorebirds during late summer when the water level drops and mudflats appear. In the winter, the water is shallow and good numbers of dabbling ducks remain after the ubiquitous Canada Geese leave for the fields every morning. A stream enters the lake from the right, and the surrounding woodland is rich with woodland birds both in breeding season and during migration.
