DESCRIPTION: The Robert G. Struble Hiking and Biking Trail, commonly known as the Struble Trail, is a paved trail that runs for 2.6 miles from the Borough of Downingtown northward along the east branch of the Brandywine Creek. It is administered by the Chester County Parks and Recreation Department. In addition to the creek the habitat is primarily mature woodlands with an occasional small open, grassy area or brushy hillside. Birding can be good at any time of year but is particularly productive during the spring migration. Cerulean Warbler were found nesting along the trail in 2004. |
DIRECTIONS: There are three points for access.
There is a parking lot at The Ponds Park in Downingtown. This is across from the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Green Street. This park has a short (0.3 mile) paved trail known as the Lions' trail which connects with the southern end of the Struble Trail at Norwood Road. The center of Downingtown is at the intersection of US 322 and Business US 30. Green Street is one block to the east of this intersection and Pennsylvania Avenue is one block (0.2 mile) north on Green Street.
· A second parking lot is located on Norwood Road just north of PA 282. PA 282 can be reached by proceeding one block west on Pennsylvania Avenue from its intersection with Green Street. Go 0.4 mile north on PA 282 and turn right on Norwood Road and go 0.3 mile to the parking area on the left.
· The third parking lot is on Dowlin Forge Road. This can be accessed by continuing north 1.4 miles on PA 282 beyond Norwood Road. Turn right onto Dowlin Forge Road and make a left immediately after the first stop sign (0.4 mile) into the parking lot. Parking space is limited.
Original plans called for the trail to be sixteen miles in length and extend all the way to Honey Brook Borough. Access permissions have thus far prevented that from happening. It is not known if or when the trail will be extended beyond its current length.
