DIRECTIONS: Take PA 36 north from Altoona about 6 miles to the top of the Allegheny front. From there you will take a right at the caution light onto Skyline Drive. Continue on Sky line Drive making no turns for 5.3 miles. You will then enter a parking lot on the right. From the lot proceed down the access road to the bottom of the hill. You will see a road that goes to the left, this soon turns into a footpath, which crosses a stream and enters a laurel thicket. This area is home to a large number of Canada Warbler and other more northern species. The path goes on for several miles, though at times it is pretty rough.
Returning to the road, you make a left and continue up the hill. The road turns into several paths and fire roads. You may want a GPS here as the area is pretty vast. Back at the parking lot , you can go across the road and enter a large reclaimed strip mine. Most of the grassland species can be found, along with Northern Harrier and American Kestrel. The view is simply beautiful and it is nice to sit in the field and watch for soaring raptors.
