DESCRIPTION: Nockamixon State Park in upper Bucks County covers 5,283 acres including the 1,450-acre Lake Nockamixon, a freshwater impoundment. In addition to the 7-mile long lake, habitats include abandoned farmfields, meadows in different stages of succession, mature hardwood forests, coniferous plantations including larch and White Pine, and marshy areas.
Nockamixon is large enough to attract any northeastern possibility, from an irruptive Snowy Owl to a Bald Eagle. The diversity of habitats has attracted close to 200 bird species, with five accidentals.
Check stands of pines for Red-breasted Nuthatch and Long-eared Owl (along roads to Fishing Pier and Kellers Church). Brushy fields have yielded Yellow-breasted Chat, Orchard Oriole, and Indigo Bunting. Waterfowl that have been attracted to the lake include Tundra and Mute swans, Blue-winged and Green-winged teal, Snow Goose, Ruddy Duck, and Red-breasted Merganser. Spotted and Solitary sandpipers and American Woodcock (in moist woodlands) are among the shorebirds that have visited.

DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of PA 313 and PA 309 in Quakertown, go east on PA 313 for about 4.8 miles. (You will pass through downtown Quakertown and then return to more rural areas.). Turn left onto PA 563 and follow it north 3.4 miles to the park office and main entrance on the right. Good access points to the water are the fishing pier (just before the main entrance), the marina and Haycock and Tohickon boat launch areas (past the main entrance along PA 563), and the Three Mile Run boat launch area (on the opposite side of the lake).
A recreational guide (which includes a map) is available at the park office. The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to sunset. The day use area is open between April 1 and October 31. From November through March, the day use area is closed to cars but open for walking. The park can be very crowded in summer. There are 10 restrooms scattered throughout the park. The restrooms in the day use area and the marina are closed during the winter. The Haycock and Tohickon boat launch and the fishing pier restrooms are open year-round. A kayak or canoe is an ideal way to explore all the marshy fingers and coves of Lake Nockamixon. Either bring your own or rent one at the boat rental concession. Call (215) 538-1340 for information. Launching facilities are open all year. Approximately 3,000 acres of Nockamixon State Park are open to hunting. Use caution when entering these areas during open seasons. SGL 157, also a hunting area, abuts the northeast border of the state park. Haycock Mountain, the second highest point in Bucks County, is within the Game Land and accessible via a hiking trail.
