DESCRIPTION: This hatchery is birder-friendly and the ponds are good for waterfowl and waders during migration. Also, when any of the ponds are drawn down for maintenance, they can attract a nice variety of shorebirds in season. |
DIRECTIONS: From the Struble Lake parking lot, return to Morgantown Road, turn left (north), go to the first intersection and turn right (east) on White School Road. Go 0.5 mile and turn right (south) on Township Line Road. At the next intersection (0.2 mile), turn left (east) on Chestnut Tree Road. Go 0.3 mile and turn right (south) on Isabella Road. Follow for 0.8 mile to entrance on the right. There are two lanes leading into the hatchery. The left (upper road) allows you to scan all of the ponds from up on the hillside. A scope is necessary. There are a couple of residences along this lane, so please be courteous to traffic coming and going.
The right lane (lower road) goes down to the office. You can continue past the office about 100 yards to the small parking area next to the shed at the water's edge. Scan the ponds from there. No access is permitted beyond this point . And foot traffic is restricted to the lane coming in and the dike out to the Purple Martin boxes. Please do not enter the lower road on Sundays.
