DESCRIPTION: This 110-acre park containing a mix of open fields and woodlots with numerous trails, is maintained by the Friends Of Union Canal Tunnel Park, and is owned by the Lebanon County Historical Society. It contains the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States, as well as over 1000 feet of reclaimed canal. This property is divided by Tunnel Hill Road into a north and south section.
Occasional Belted Kingfisher, Mallards and Canada Geese may be seen on the old canal. Great-horned Owls have been observed in the northeast area of the south section of the park. Resident birds such as Northern Cardinal, Carolina Chickadee, Song Sparrow, and Carolina Wren may be seen in the hillside woodlot containing Hawks Flight and Gravel Hill Trails. Spring migration during the end of April and early May have resulted in numerous species observation.
Detailed birding directions: Eastern Bluebirds may be seen along the Blue Bird Trail and around Scout Meadow, where several bluebird nesting boxes are located. The start of the Hawks Flight Trail near the 3-bay maintenance garage and the far eastern section of Gravel Hill trail can be good at times for resident birds.
Note that birding data for this site has been entered at eBird for the last several years as it is the location for the Great Backyard Bird Count as conducted by the Quittapahilla Audubon Society. |
DIRECTIONS: Take route 72 north to just outside Lebanon City limits, turn left at the light onto 22nd Street; follow 22nd Street 0.3 mile to Union Canal Drive; turn right onto Union Canal Drive. Follow Union Canal Drive 0.3 miles to main entrance of Union Canal Tunnel Park off 25th Street.
