Milesburn and Ridge Roads
Cumberland
DESCRIPTION: Milesburn and Ridge Roads are gravel roads kept in good condition to be found in the Michaux State Forest. They are most likely the premier fall migrant traps in Cumberland County. You can find just about any species of warbler there in fall migration, many of them in large numbers. Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers can also be found there along with Philadelphia Vireo and Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrush. These roads are also a wonderful place to find a wide variety of woodland breeding species. At the Big Flat Parking area there are Pine Warblers. Along Ridge Road you will find Oven Bird and Black-and-white Warbler, along with Common Ravens and Wild Turkey. About a mile east of its intersection with Milesburn Road there is an area planted in conifers which provides a unique habitat where Hermit Thrushes and Yellow-rumped Warblers are found on a regular basis and where some summers you can find Red-breasted Nuthatches and Golden-crowned Kinglets. On Milesburn you will find breeding Blue-headed Vireos and Scarlet Tanagers, along Black-throated Green and Black-throated Blue Warblers. Hooded Warblers are abundant here along with Worm-eating Warblers and Louisiana Waterthrush. It is the only place in Cumberland County that you can find breeding Canada Warblers, though there are usually only 2 or 3 singing males.

DIRECTIONS: From Shippensburg turn off US 11 onto Queen Street heading south. The road soon turns into Baltimore Road. Travel about 3.25 miles to Baltimore, Whitehouse and Witmer Roads, taking a right onto Baltimore. From that point it is about 1.5 miles to Milesburn Road on your right. You may enter there or continue to drive up hill another 3 miles to Ridge Road which will be on your right and enter there. If you continue another 0.4 miles the Big Flat parking area will be on your right.
