Dick & Nancy Eales Preserve at Moosic Mountain (Moosic Mountain Preserve)
Lackawanna
DESCRIPTION: An extensive trail system traverses this property, giving easy walking access to several different habitat types, including: heath barrens (with Vaccinia spp., Rhodora...), pine/oak forest, ponds, a lake, forest streams, and bogs. This site seems to be a good place to occasionally spot some unusual migrants, including flyover Bald Eagle, Common Loon, and Bobolink. The woodlands can be rich with nesting warblers and thrushes. From the main entrance (the middle of three parking areas on PA 247), you can walk along dirt roads for a good distance. Look and listen for birds as you go, making note of the trails off the sides of the roads. Most of the trails go through alternating woodland and open areas, offering a good assortment of the birds here. From the parking area farthest to the southeast (closest to the entrance to Moosic Lake), you walk through a young oak forest which opens to more heath barrens. Chestnut-sided and Prairie warblers should be common here in the breeding season. At the first poorly-developed path to the left, you can work your way down hill a short distance to a bog. Purple Pitcher Plants and Skunk Cabbage can be found in this wetland. From the parking area closest to Jessup, supposedly there is another bog. One woodland trail does lead to a lake.

DIRECTIONS: From I-81, take exit 187 for Carbondale/US 6. Once on US 6, go just over four miles. Take Exit 3 for Jessup, and travel south on Moosic Lake Road/PA 247 for about two miles. The main entrance to the parking area will be on your left.
