Rushton Woods Preserve
Chester
DESCRIPTION: This 80-acre gem features a mature beech/oak/tulip poplar forest (part of a contiguous 234-acre forest) set next to a 6-acre sustainable farm with wildflower fields suspended in early succession and hedgerows. Birds include a variety of interior forest species, notably breeding Scarlet Tanager, Wood Thrush, Veery, Ovenbird, and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. There are also edge species including Eastern Towhee and field species like Indigo Bunting and Orchard Oriole. The preserve is home to the WCT bird banding station, which is open to the public during spring and fall songbird migration and through October for Saw-whet Owl migration. Many exciting migrant warblers visit the preserve, including Connecticut Warbler. Rushton is also the Chester County field site for PA Young Birders.
