Reservoir #4 (Dam #4)
Washington
DESCRIPTION: Reservoir #4 is a body of water located just south of Washington, only a few minute's drive from Washington Cemetery. Local people sometimes refer to this site as Dam #4. The area surrounding the reservoir includes both residential and woodland areas. Reservoir #4 is best known for waterfowl. Many species of duck can be found here during migration, sometimes in large numbers, including American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked, Hooded Merganser, and others. Other species that visit the reservoir occasionally include Pied-billed Grebe, Horned Grebe, American Coot, Common Loon, Double-crested Cormorant and both Tundra and Mute swan. Wood Ducks and Canada Geese breed here, and Belted Kingfishers are common. Reservoir #4 can also be a good place to find songbirds and woodpeckers, including Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Cedar Waxwings can usually be found here in good numbers in September, catching insects above the water. Note: there are "no trespassing" signs posted around this site, but fortunately it is possible to view the water from both roads that surround it (Scenic Drive and Cove Road.). There are several places to pull over and park along the roads. Except for waterfowl that is located near the shore, it is usually necessary to use a spotting scope to get a proper look.

DIRECTIONS: From I-70, take Exit 15 (W. Chestnut St./PA 231 N/US-40E). Follow the signs for Us 40 East and go 0.2 to 0.3 miles an turn right on Franklin Farms Road. Go 1.1 miles and turn right on Park Avenue (PA 18). Go 0.2 miles and turn left on Scenic Drive. Go 0.8 miles to the pull-off on the right. This will be your starting point. At the starting point, there is a dam and also a small field between the road and the shore. Waterfowl can often be found here and throughout the rest of the reservoir during migration times. There are several other places to pull over and view the water from Scenic Drive for the next 1.2 miles. Then turn right onto Cove Road. This road has less traffic, making parking along the side of the road easier. At the end of the reservoir, there is a good place to pull over and park on the left side of the road. The shore is very close to the road here so it's a good place to look for waterfowl that might be nearby.
