DESCRIPTION: Pine Run is a small (39 acre) lake bordered to the south and east by seasonal mudflats and large patches of weedy, dry fields and grassy, wet fields. There is an elevated path that runs along the southeastern shore of the lake from Iron Hill Rd. The property is owned by Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority and is open to the public.
From fall through spring, the lake often hosts an impressive collection of waterfowl for such a relatively small body of water, including many geese (often with Cackling mixed in), dabbling ducks, and mergansers (Common and Hooded). During migration, the margins of the lake are often exposed, and shorebirds and Glossy Ibis have been recorded here. Orchard Orioles breed at Pine Run near Iron Hill Rd. Perhaps the most unique birding aspect of the site is the large, grassy, wet area to the southeast of the lake. This has hosted a really special set of rare, wetland birds including Yellow Rail, Black Rail, Le Conte's Sparrow and Nelson's Sparrow. A walk through the grass (bring your knee boots) during fall migration (try late September through November) will often turn up Wilson's Snipe, Savannah Sparrows, and Eastern Meadowlarks in addition to potential rarities. Walking with multiple other birders is a good way to maximize birdfinding in this habitat where the target birds often can run away undetected from a single observer. |
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of US 202 and PA 611, go west on US 202 for 0.5-0.6 mile (depending on whether you are going north or south on PA 611) and turn right on Iron Hill Road. Go 0.7 mile to a T and turn left on Iron Hill Road. Follow the road 0.7 mile to its end at a parking lot. From the parking area, enter the large open area to the southwest. The lake is on the right (north) and the grassy, wet fields are on the left.
