DESCRIPTION: Camp Tuckahoe has served as a boy scout/cub scout summer camp since 1948. It covers 1,300 acres.
Camp Tuckahoe includes a lake, forest land, and forest edge (primarily Tower Road). In March and April, American Woodcock have been seen at dusk in some new-growth forest along Tower Road.
From the parking lot, walk on the dirt road around a bend to the right and to a T. Turn left on Tower Road (no sign). Walk about two minutes down a gentle grade to the bottom, across a small creek (just two pipes under the road), and begin a gentle climb. In about one minute, the trees will become shorter and a small clearing will appear on the right. The American Woodcocks have appeared in this area, on both sides of Tower Road.
Birding can continue on Tower Road up the hills. |
DIRECTIONS: From PA 74/US 15 intersection just north of Dillsburg, go south on US 15 for 0.45 mile and turn right on Mountain Road. Go 0.7 mi. and turn right on Campground Road. Go 0.2 mi. and turn left on Pine St. Go 0.9 mi. to a stop sign ("Welcome to Tuckahoe" sign diagonally across from the stop sign). Continue straight on paved road for 1 mile and another 0.3 mi. on partially paved and badly pot-holed road to the gated entrance. (If the gate is closed, park outside the gate and walk in.) Proceed into Camp Tuckahoe beside Memory Lake on the left. At the end of the lake, turn right up a dirt road to a parking lot.
