DESCRIPTION: Sunfish Pond County Park has a 30-acre lake adjoining forested gamelands which are good for forest-dwelling species. Its proximity to Mt. Pisgah State Park provides for a combined visit of these two locations. The park is open from mid-May to September, from sunrise to 9:30 PM.
Breeding birds include Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Least Flycatcher, and Cedar Waxwing. In the surrounding gamelands look for American Woodcock, Spotted Sandpiper, Barred Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Belted Kingfisher, Cliff Swallow, Hermit Thrush, American Redstart, Scarlet Tanager, warblers, sparrows, and vireos. |
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of PA 414 and SR 3010 in the town of Leroy, signs appear for the county park. Go south on SR 3010 (Mill St), which becomes Leroy Mountain Road, a steep, rugged, dirt road. At 2.4 miles, turn right (there is a sign) into the park. To reach interesting areas in the gamelands, from Barclay, take Foot Plains Road south to the Schrader Creek and Sugar Run area and explore.
