DESCRIPTION: The Lower Trail (pronounced like flower) is a 17.5-mile Rails to Trails path that follows the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River extending from Canoe Creek State Park to Alexandria. It is one of the state's most important breeding areas for Cerulean Warbler, with up to 60 breeding pairs.
It is an excellent area for migrant passerines and breeding birds include Cerulean Warbler, American Redstart, Baltimore Oriole, Orchard Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Worm-eating Warbler, Yel low-throated Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Parula, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Warbling Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Winter Wren, Least Flycatcher, Acadian Flycatcher, Wood Thrush, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, and Wood Duck. Residents include Pileated Woodpecker and Song Sparrow. |
DIRECTIONS: From PA 45 and US 22 in Water Street, go east on US 22 for 0.2mile and park on the right at the Water Street Flea Market and go between the buildings to the trail head gate and walk south (upstream). The first mile should yield all of the birds mentioned above.
