Trexler Nature Preserve (Lehigh Valley Zoo, Trexler Game Preserve)
Lehigh
DESCRIPTION: Rolling hills of Eastern Pennsylvania. The nature preserve has three separate "ranges"...the North, Central, and South Range. The first two ranges are approximately 500 acres in size. The latter is approximately 100 acres. Habitat is a mixture of open fields and hardwood stands. A true "woodlot" type of habitat. There are dozens of miles of trails now completed within the preserve which allow access to the entire area. Site maps are located at various access points at all three ranges. This area is vastly underutilized for birding. The entire area is great during migration for warblers. A great variety of waterfowl also utilize the area as the Jordan creek meanders its way through all three of the ranges. Migrating raptors can also be observed from a variety of high vantage points throughout the preserve. Any of the major trail areas will lead you to great birding opportunities. The Birdwatching, Elk and Covered Bridge trails cover the central range quite nicely. The North Range has several trails of which the Teardrop Trail is the most often utilized. The South Range has only recently been opened. The Perimeter Trail runs through it. As mentioned, there are maps posted throughout the various ranges at signposts to give you some idea of the trail system. Description adapted from Birds of the Lehigh Valley and Vicinty, available at http://www.lehigh.edu/~bcm0/lvas/BOLV.htm.
