DESCRIPTION: This is the treated effluent spray irrigation area of Penn State University. Formerly a part of SGL 176, it was sold to PSU in 2002. It consists of cropland (corn, oats, soybean), hedgerows, and small woodlots of secondary growth. There are abundant invasive plant species (autumn olive, amur honeysuckle, privet, etc.).
A pond attracts a variety of waterfowl, herons, shorebirds, Osprey, and Bald Eagle in small numbers during migration. The hedgerows are good for a variety of sparrows and mimids. Gathering flocks of robins, blackbirds, and Cedar Waxwings are common in fall into winter.
The numerous dirt service roads that crisscross the 600+ acres are easy walking. Vehicles are not permitted, so you must park at the parking lot and walk in. |
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of US 322 bypass and Park Avenue just northeast of State College, go southwest on Park Ave. (toward Beaver Stadium) for one mile, turn rght onto Fox Hollow Road, go 1.8 miles to Cricklewood Drive, turn left, go 0.2 miles to a dirt parking lot on the right (Just before the American Ale House Restaurant). A sign at the north end of the parking lot says "Spray Irrigation Area, Penn State University."
To walk to the pond, walk in on the road from the parking lot, then take the second road to the left. Continue on to the next road and turn right. Continue to the next road and turn left. Continue on to the third road and turn left, then continue on to the pond. Walking time (with no stops) to the pond is about 30 minutes.
