Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center
Berks
DESCRIPTION: Over 110 bird species have been recorded at Nolde. The micro-habitat of spruce plantations attract nesting Golden-crowned Kinglet (irregular) and Red-breasted Nuthatch, species normally found farther north. It is also a reliable place to see and hear Pileated Woodpecker, Barred, Great Horned and Eastern Screech- owls, Scarlet Tanager, Northern Parula, and Veery. Approximately 213 acres of the Center are conifer plantations. Large stands of Norway spruce and white pine are present. Smaller areas of Douglas fir, Japanese larch, and red pine may be found. A mixed oak, maple, and beech forest covers 436 acres of the center. Principal tree species include red, white, black, and chestnut oak, tulip poplar, red maple, cherry, beech, black birch, and yellow birch. Field areas are extremely limited at the center. A three-acre field is maintained near the main entrance and a quarter-acre plot at Fire Gate Five. Several older field areas have succeeded to brush and aspen, birch, and alder saplings. Several woodland wetland areas adjoin the three small streams that traverse the center. The conifers in the northern half of the park are the best areas to find nesting Red-breasted Nuthatch and Golden-crowned Kinglet.

DIRECTIONS: The 666-acre Nolde Forest is located in the valley of the Angelica Creek. From the intersection of PA 724 and PA 625 just south of Reading, go south on PA 625 for 2 miles to the entrance on the right (west). Get a trail map at the office, as the trails are numerous and confusing
