Allegheny Front - Hawkwatch
Bedford
DESCRIPTION: This location is on the eastern edge of the Allegheny Mountains in western Pennsylvania . It is located at an elevation of 2800 feet on the Allegheny escarpment. East winds are necessary for best results at this watch. The site is known for its predictable Golden Eagle flights (greater than 100/season) and the close views of raptors in general. It is the most western of the hawk watches. The count period is from last weekend in August until the last weekend in November. There is also a spring hawk watch. Visitors can bring lawn chairs. There is plenty of room for parking. It is handicapped accessible; no walking is required

DIRECTIONS: From US 30 at Reels Corners take PA 160 north 4 miles into Central City. Where PA 160 makes a sharp left in Central City instead go straight onto Lambert Street (SR1018). Lambert Street becomes Shaffer Mountain Road (SR1018) outside Central City. 1.4 mile out of Central City bear right at a Y intersection onto Lambert Mountain Road (SR1035).Go 3.1 mile, through SGL 228, to a small 4-way intersection (Daley on topo maps) where Lambert Mountain Road intersects Fleegle Road (TR817). Go straight through the intersection, staying on Lambert Mountain Road, which becomes a dirt road. There is a cemetery on the right. Go 0.5 mile to a blue gate on the right. Turn right at the blue gate and go 0.25 mile to the hawk watch parking area. There are aluminum falcon symbols along either side of this dirt road. If the gate is closed find a place to park near the gate, and walk the 0.25 mile to the hawkwatch. This dirt road from the blue gate ends at the hawkwatch
