State Game Lands 169 and Dickcissel Area (Newville)

DESCRIPTION: In addition to the wetlands located in this gamelands, there is a landfill across the road that attracts gulls, which then rest on the ponds in the gamelands. The wetlands attract rails and the weedy fields are very good for migrating sparrows. American Woodcock can be found in the spring. Just a few miles away is an area in which Dickcissel have become almost annual breeders.

DIRECTIONS: From PA 641 and PA 233 in Newville, go west on PA 641 for 5.9 miles and turn right (north) on Mountain Road. Go about 0.6 mile to the parking area on the right. Cross the road and walk the trail around the wetlands to look for rails and gulls. The fields to the east of the parking area are good for migrating sparrows. Continue north on Mountain Road for 0.6 mile to a parking area on the left. The valley below this lot is a good place to look and listen for American Woodcock in spring. Continue north on Mountain Road for 0.2 mile and turn right (east) on Gamelands Road. Go 0.7 mile to the intersection with Bridgewater Road. Bear right on Bridgewater Road and go another 1.7 miles to the parking area on the left. Park here and walk the trail north along the creek to look for Prothonotary Warbler, waders, and riparian species. Return to Mountain Road and continue north for 2 miles to PA 997 (Enola Road). Turn left and check the first field on the right (north) for Dickcissel. If you don't find them here, continue west on PA 997 another 1.4 miles and turn right (north) on Potato Point Road. Check the field on the west side of the road. Return to PA 997 and continue west for 0.3 mile and check the fields on the south side of the road. These fields are just after you cross a stream.
