DESCRIPTION: This area is zoned for conservation and includes diverse habitat of woodland, meadow, marshy wetland, a small stream, and a quarry.
Birding is best here during spring migration and early summer nesting season. A total of 125 species have been seen in this area. Most recently Pileated woodpeckers have been seen here for the first time in over 20 years. In spring migration birds seen here include warblers, thrushes, orioles, vireos, tanagers, and flycatchers. Louisiana Waterthrush is noted every spring. Many of these species are also nesters in this area. Great Horned Owl and Cooper's Hawk have been confirmed nesting as well. Belted Kingfisher is regularly seen.
After parking in the small pull-off area by the bridge, proceed back to the bridge. Both sides of the bridge are good for birding, the marshy wetland is to the south. Walk back along Hillside going south to the next bridge (intersection with Tanglewood). Along Hillside there is a wooded hillside to the left (east) and to the right (west) there is a small stream, the marshy wetland, meadow, and small wooded area. After reaching the second bridge at Tanglewood, proceed up the hill on Hillside. There is a small secluded quarry on the right as you go up the hill and a meadow is on the left. Wood duck are seen in the quarry in spring. |
DIRECTIONS: From US 22, between Allentown and Bethlehem, take the Airport Road (PA 987) North exit. Go 4 miles to intersection of PA 987 and PA 329 (Nor-Bath Blvd.) Turmn left onto PA 329 west. Go 1.7 miles and turn right onto Tanglewood Road. (to reach this spot you will pass Green Beans Nursery on the right, Tanglewood is 0.3 mile after the nursery). Go 1 mile on Tanglewood and come to a stop sign at the intersection of Tanglewood and Hillside Roads. Turn right, crossing over a small bridge, and go 0.3 mile to the next stop sign. This is the intersection of Hillside and Valley View Roads. Turn left and cross over the small bridge. You can park on the right side of the road after crossing the bridge. There is a small pull-off area of grass and you may park there.
