DESCRIPTION: Hills Creek State Park is a 406-acre park offering fishing, swimming, boating, and camping, including rental cabins. Hiking trails skirt the park and lake for good access to both forested (primarily northern hardwoods) and aquatic habitats. Recently sighted birds include loons, grebes, mergansers, Merlin, Northern Goshawk, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, Double-crested Cormorant, Wood Duck, scaup, Caspian Tern, Bald Eagle, and American Coot. Many of the open-water species seen at Hammond Lake are also found at the smaller Hills Creek Lake. |
DIRECTIONS: To reach Hills Creek Lake, drive south on PA 287 from the entrance to Hammond Lake-Ives Run for 2.8 miles. There a sign will direct you to turn left (east). Drive another 7 miles, following the signs, and turn left into the boat launch at Hills Creek Lake. To the left of the launch is a small wetland with recent beaver activity. Walk Lake Side Trail (2.5 miles) for excellent forest and water birding. To reach the main park entrance, continue on the paved road another mile. Turn left into the park and check open waters for waterbirds as you drive across the dam. Take the next left turn to swimming and camping areas with additional trails, or continue straight ahead for 1 mile to Tauscher Pond. At the T intersection, turn left onto unimproved Lake Road, and the pond will shortly become visible to your left.
