State Game Lands 189
Beaver
DESCRIPTION: SGL 189 is very close to Raccoon Creek State Park and is worth a visit, especially because it affords a nearby opportunity to see various shrubland and second growth specialist species that are relatively uncommon in the park.

DIRECTIONS: From the US 30 entrance to the State Park, head west on US 30 for 0.6 miles to Park Road and turn right. Drive another 0.5 miles to Allison Road, and turn left. Allison Road is a graded dirt road that terminates in a SGL parking lot at 0.5 miles. Hiking the trails above the gate in spring and summer should produce good numbers of local breeders such as White-eyed Vireo, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Bluebird, Blue-winged Warbler, Field Sparrow, as well as the possibility for both cuckoo species. The area is also worthwhile in May and September for migrants and general birding, but is quite uninteresting in the winter months. The Allison Road parking area has also been a good location for Barred Owl in recent years.
