Upper Delaware River at Lackawaxen
Pike
DESCRIPTION: The Upper Delaware and Lackawaxen Rivers are home to a large population of wintering Bald Eagle. Twenty-five or more eagles can be found in one day by following the below directions. Prime eagle-watching begins in the middle of December and lasts until the end of February.

DIRECTIONS: From I-84, take exit number 46. Follow US 6 West for 10.8 miles. Turn right onto PA 434. Follow PA 434 for 1.6 miles until you reach PA 590. Continue straight on PA 590 West for 4.6 miles. Turn right onto Scenic Drive (TR 427) following signs to the Roebling Bridge. Follow this road for 0.3 miles to right turn heading toward the Roebling Bridge and park in the lot immediately on the right. Across the street is the office of The Eagle Institute. The small visitor center (only open in the winter) provides additional eagle information, maps, a short video, and eagle souvenirs. After visiting the center, now is when the eagle watching begins. Turn left out of the parking lot and right onto Scenic Drive. After 0.4 miles there is a fishing access parking area. Park here and scan the area where the Lackawaxen River empties into the Delaware River. This is one of the most reliable spots to view eagles and volunteers from the Eagle Institute are there on the weekends to provide spotting scopes and answer questions. To continue, take a right out of the parking area. After 0.2 miles take a right onto PA 590. This road follows the Lackawaxen River upstream. After another 3.7 miles go straight onto Towpath Road, continuing to follow the Lackawaxen. Both of these roads are small and both sides of the road are private land. Please respect property owners (and the eagles) by staying inside your car to view the eagles. You can follow Towpath Road for as long as you wish being careful to pull over safely to view the eagles. Keep an eye open for eagles sitting in streamside trees and pull off where safe to view therm. When done, simply turn around, find the birds you missed the first time through, and follow the directions backwards to complete your trip.
