Minsi Lake and Bear Swamp
Northampton
DESCRIPTION: Minsi Lake is a 117-acre man-made lake surrounded by woodland with nature trails that hold migrants in both spring and fall. Common nesting species include Veery, Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, Pileated Woodpecker, Wood Duck, and Red-eyed Vireo. Summer brings hunting Osprey and winter brings in hunting Bald Eagle when the lake isn't completely frozen. Then it's a favorite haunt of ice fishermen. The adjacent Bear Swamp holds the most unusual species to be found there along a raised boardwalk trail. Barred Owl, Acadian Flycatcher, and Swamp Sparrow are among the nesters, while herons and the occasional American Bittern have been found.
