Ambridge Reservoir
Beaver
DESCRIPTION: This is the largest lake in Beaver County.

DIRECTIONS: From the Raccoon Creek Park Office on PA 18, head north on PA 18 for 5.7 miles to Service Church Road and turn right. (This is 2.5 miles north of the US 30/PA 18 intersection, which is 3.2 miles north of the Park Office.) Service Church Road travels along the north side of the reservoir, which is heavily wooded on all sides, though a few breaks in the trees allow for viewing of the lake, which is fairly reliable for the expected migrant waterfowl in March and April and again in October and November, but is uninteresting at other seasons. Common Loon are also quite regular here in spring. The hillside opposite the lake is comprised of thick brush that gives way to dense woods higher up and can be good during spring and (especially) fall passerine migration. Continuing 1.4 miles on Service Church Road from PA 18, you arrive at Service United Presbyterian Church on the right. Parking in the church parking lot and wandering the church grounds not only affords an extensive view of the lake (bring a scope during the waterfowl seasons), but can be very good for passerines, including Eastern Kingbird, Yellow Warbler, and Orchard Oriole, all of which nest here. The cemetery on the hillside is adjacent to an extensive pine plantation, which is good in the winter for Red-breasted Nuthatch and possibly Pine Siskin. Barred Owl breed in the area as well. Church services are usually held at 11 AM on Sundays, so birding the church grounds is best avoided between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Sundays. Beyond the church, Service Church Road climbs steeply uphill and bends to the left. Birding along this section of road for passerines can be productive and is similar to the birding described above. After 1.2 miles the road comes parallel to another arm of the reservoir at a small bridge, which should be checked for dabbling ducks in season. Northern Waterthrush has also been located in this spot in some years. After another 0.7 miles, Service Church Road terminates at an intersection with Green Garden Road. Turning right here returns you to PA 60 at Exit 10 (Aliquippa) in 4.0 miles.
