DESCRIPTION: Susquehanna Riverlands consists of property on both sides of the Susquehanna River owned and operated by the PPL Corporation and Allegheny Electric Cooperative. The west side of the river has a recreational area and a wetlands nature area which provide a variety of habitats and a wealth of birds. The most notable feature on the east side is the Council Cup Overlook, which is a hawk watch in the fall.
The location along the river serves as a migrant corridor, so the best time to bird is spring and fall, but the nesting species, such as rails (rare) and Empidonax flycatchers make the breeding season interesting as well. For instance, Willow Flycatcher nest in the wetlands on the west shore, while Alder Flycatcher nest in the thickets on Council Cup on the east shore. |
DIRECTIONS: From the east side of Berwick where the east and west-bound lanes of US 11 merge, go north on US 11for 5.7 miles to the entrance road on the right. Drive down to the parking area and follow the trails around the Wetlands Nature Area. You can also walk the trails around the recreation area from here, or return to US 11, turn right (north) and go 0.8 mile to the entrance to the recreation area on the right.
