Rickett's Glen State Park
Luzerne
DESCRIPTION: This 13,050-acre park is a forested park with a 245-acre lake and a gorgeous series of waterfalls tumbling down the mountainside. Although the Falls Trail is a wonder of scenic beauty, you won't here many birds there due to the noisy waterfalls. However, there are other (quieter) trails well worth hiking to see northern warblers and other forest-dwelling birds. The Highland Trail, about 2.5 miles, will yield most of the breeding birds characteristic of this region including Alder Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Magnolia, Yellow-rumped, and Blackburnian warblers, Northern Waterthrush, and Purple Finch. For the more adventurous (and physically fit), the Cherry Run and Mountain Springs trails (about 10 miles) will yield the same birds and more. Swainson's Thrush have been found breeding along the Mountains Springs Trail between Mountain Springs Lake and Cherry Run. In winter, the various coniferous stands in the area can attract winter finches, but this is highly variable. The lake stays frozen so late into the spring that waterfowl migration is usually non-existent.

DIRECTIONS: The park is located 30 miles north of Bloomsburg on PA 487.
