Fogelsville Quarry
Lehigh
DESCRIPTION: The Fogelsville Quarry is a former stone quarry now filled with water. It sits at the edge of the Upper Macungie Township Park, which contains mowed playing fields, a picnic area, and a small deciduous woodlot. The quarry attracts a good variety of waterbirds including Common Loon, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, geese, American Coot, and many species of diving and puddle ducks, along with Great Blue Heron at the edge. At least two Great Blue Heron nests have been present in recent years, with activity most visible in April. Another recent feature has been large numbers of Snow Geese passing through in March, with an occasional Ross's Goose or White-fronted Goose among them. Birding is generally best in the late fall and early spring, though the Christmas Bird Count often finds some interesting waterfowl present. Nesting species include Wood Duck on the dam pond and Orchard Oriole on the opposite side of the road. Migrants occasionally seen here are Great Egret, Hooded Merganser, Osprey, Spotted Sandpiper, and, rarely, Black-crowned Night-Heron. Great Blue Heron are often present very early in the morning, and Great Horned Owl and Eastern Screech-Owls can sometimes be heard in the early spring at dusk or dawn. A scope is needed to identify most birds at the quarry. Traffic is sparse but fast-moving in the dam area, so be sure to stand off of the road. There are restrooms in the park building near the quarry lot, but they may not be open in all seasons. Other bathrooms can be found at fast food restaurants on PA 100. To get to the dam area, follow Haasadahl Road north 0.5 mile, just past the intersection with Hilltop Road. There is a small turnout on the left side of the road that can be used for parking, and another one 0.1 mile farther.
