DESCRIPTION: Copper Road Wetland is on private land in Slippery Rock Township. The cattail marsh is easy to see from the road, using binoculars, and the road is level so birders can also set up a scope in order to get closer views. It is only 0.3 of a mile from the edge of the marsh to the little cement bridge and swamp area, but the body of water in the cattail marsh extends far out into the landscape.
The swamp is on the east side of the road and is close to the road. The cattail marsh is on the west side of the road. The marsh is surrounded by deciduous woods and pasture. Cattails abound but there is still plenty of open water for good viewing.
You can expect to see a lot of waterfowl here during migration. In summer, Wood Duck, Mallard, American Coot, Pied-billed Grebe, Common Moorhen, and Hooded Merganser can usually be seen at the marsh. Virginia Rail and Sora can be heard and sometimes seen near the little cement bridge. Common Tern and Sandhill Crane have been reported there in early May. |
DIRECTIONS: From US 422 and PA 388, east of New Castle, take US 422 east for 0.75 mile and turn right (south) onto Copper Road at the pond. Go 2.1 miles on Copper Road to the wetland on the right.
