Winslow - Grant Hill
Elk
DESCRIPTION: Winslow Hill is one of the most popular nature-viewing areas in Pennsylvania, but not primarily for birds. It is the best area to view elk in the Commonwealth, and many people go there for this purpose. There are two public overlooks with good vistas (the first overlooks an area presently being mined for limestone to use in a USACE project to restore the streams of the Winslow Hill area, which have been damaged by past coal mining). Much of the land is privately owned, though the area north of the Hill is almost entirely public land and can be reached via Porcupine Road (dirt). There are some areas of SGL 311 that are restored strip mines and are maintained as grasslands. Respect for persons viewing elk should preclude one from disturbing the fields beneath the viewing areas. The habitat is very diverse, with grasslands, hemlock stands, oak and northern hardwoods intermingled. It is worth visiting just to see the elk, which is a very popular pastime, particularly evenings in late summer and fall.

DIRECTIONS: From Exit 111 on I-80 take PA 153 North 8 miles to Penfield and turn right (northeast) on PA 255 north. Go 6.5 miles to Weedville and go right (east) on PA 555 for 9.8 miles to Benezette. Opposite the Benezette store turn left (north) onto Winslow Hill Road. Follow the signs to the Elk Viewing Areas, which are on the top of Winslow Hill. The paved road goes 5.7 miles from Benezette, up Winslow hill, descending (sharp curve) to the village of Grant on PA 555.
