Appears to be a first-year male.

Description:
I am terrible with written descriptions and will leave that to my photos. I will note that the bird had no leg bands, had both halluces with nails, and had normal-looking flight feathers.

Behavior:
It was a very skittish bird and was, in fact, the first bird to flush when it felt uneasy.

Separation from similar species:
The distinctive plumage patterns and coloration rule out all other waterfowl.

Discussion:
I have added an extreme crop of the photo showing both halluces of the bird.
