Allegheny Land Trust does exemplary work in permanently protecting important habitats, inviting the public to explore green spaces, and educating residents of southwestern Pennsylvania on environmental issues.
ALT has 22 preserves. Among them is Wingfield Pines Conservation Area, a popular birding site that is emblematic of ALTโs approach. A site that was previously affected by acid mine drainage, the land trust worked with engineers to devise a treatment system that improves water quality and allows the property to be used for birding and other recreation while providing flood protection and green space to the community.
ALT’s Regional Conservation Agenda details their strategic approach, prioritizing lands for protection that support biodiversity, enhance water resources, and define the scenic character of southwestern Pennsylvania. ALT is helping to create a resilient region, characterized by abundant green spaces that are easily accessible, thereby not only protecting avian and wildlife habitat, but also ensuring a higher quality of life for all.
ALT’s education programs reach people across the area. In addition to programs held on ALT preserves, their educators travel to schools to engage tomorrowโs conservation leaders. With programs for children of all ages and adults, ALT is inspiring its community to conserve natural resources and provide habitat for birds.
ALTโs steadfast belief in the indispensability of green space to overall well-being underscores their significance in the conservation landscape.
