2010

Varied Thrush — Thornhurst, Lackawanna County; January 10, 2010. Photos by Jennifer Grab. This male was first noticed visiting the Grab’s feeder in late December 2009. Their daughter took these photos. This bird represents the 1st record for Lackawanna County.

2009

Varied Thrush — Peace Valley Park, Bucks County; December 22, 2009. Photo by Devich Farbotnik. This bird was found by Cameron Rutt on December 21st. Note the head pattern with orange coloration and the wing markings. This bird represents the 3rd record for Bucks County.

Varied Thrush — Salisbury Township, Lehigh County; January 30 – April 11, 2009. Photos by Denise Reinhart. This bird visited the Reinhart backyard. Note the hint of a breast band on the buffy throat and breast, and the buff-colored wing markings and eyebrow. Expert birder, Peter Pyle confirmed that this bird is a first-year male. He also mentioned that the lack of a breastband is “a pigment anomaly” that he has seen a few times before in photos and specimens. This bird represents the 1st record for Lehigh County.

Varied Thrush — Salisbury Township, Lehigh County; January 30 – April 11, 2009. Photos by Howard Eskin. Again, note the hint of a breast band on the buffy throat and breast, and the buff-colored wing markings and eyebrow. More photos of this bird can be found on Howard Eskin’s webpage.

2006

Varied Thrush — Boalsburg, Centre County; April 26, 2006. Photo by Mark Niessner. This bird was found on the property of Andy & Fran McEachern. Note this first-year male’s black mask through the eye, the dark breast band on the buffy throat and breast, and the buff-colored wing markings and eyebrow.

2004-2005

Varied Thrush — Caledonia State Park, Franklin County; December 8, 2004 to April 2, 2005. Photos by Bob Moul. Note the faint breast band on the buffy throat and breast, and the buff-colored wing markings and eyebrow. Expert birder, Peter Pyle identified this bird as a first-year female. More photos of this bird can be found on Bob Moul’s website.
